Why Are My Gutters Coming Loose?

Your gutters are likely coming loose because the fascia board behind the gutters are rotten. This happens when the gutters get plugged with debris, overflow or are installed incorrectly.

When water repeatedly spills over the back of the gutter instead of flowing through the downspout, it soaks directly into the fascia board. Over time, constant moisture exposure weakens the wood structure behind the gutter system.

Even if gutters are cleaned out twice a year, there are often wet leaves and debris that sit inside the gutter between cleanings. This moisture near the fascia will rot out wooden fascia over time causing it to rot. Over time the gutter fasteners will no longer be secure and the gutter will pull away from the fascia or fall off.

As the wood softens, screws and spikes lose their grip. The added weight from water, snow, or ice can then cause sections to sag or detach completely.

What is the solution to this problem?

The fascia should be replaced with pvc fascia and the new gutters should have leaf guards installed. These guards should be brushed off occasionally using an extension pole brush from the ground.

Some leaves may gather on top but will dry out quickly and get blown off or get brushed off with a brush once a year.

Addressing the root cause early can prevent structural damage, protect your roof edge, and extend the life of your entire gutter system.
