A leaking gutter doesn’t always mean you need to replace it. A lot of the time it can be fixed pretty simply, but it really depends on the condition of the gutter.

If the gutters are relatively new, leaks are usually caused by the original sealant. Sometimes it wasn’t applied properly to begin with and there are small spots that were never fully sealed. Other times the sealant just didn’t bond right at the seams or end caps.

In those situations, a proper reseal is usually all that’s needed. As long as the metal is still in good shape, you can clean it up, remove the old sealant, and apply a new seal that actually closes everything up. When it’s done right, it can last a long time.

Where it changes is on older gutter systems.

Over the years, sealant starts to break down from sun exposure and weather. At the same time, the metal itself can start to corrode. Once that happens, you’re no longer sealing against a solid surface. Even if you reseal it, the bond isn’t the same, and it usually doesn’t hold the way you want it to.

In those cases, a reseal is more of a temporary fix than a real solution. It might stop the leak for now, but it’s common for it to come back.

So it really comes down to the condition of the gutter. If it’s newer and the issue is just a bad seal, a reseal makes sense. If it’s older and the material is starting to break down, it’s usually better to look at a more permanent repair or replacement.
